What Is a Lane Departure Warning?

2020 Honda CR-V

What is a Lane Departure Warning? If you’ve been researching new Honda vehicles, you’ve almost certainly come across this driver assistance safety feature. It’s often offered as standard with the Honda Sensing® package, and it can help you stay safely centered in your lane on the highways near San Diego and Carlsbad.

How Does the LDW Work?

You already know that the Lane Departure Warning can help you exercise caution, but how does LDW work, exactly? Here’s what you should know:

  • The focal point of your LDW is a camera located near your rearview mirror.
  • The camera automatically detects lane lines, and your Honda vehicle’s computer determines what side of the line you should be on.
  • If the camera sees you move past the lane marker without your turn signal on, the system will flash, beep, and/or vibrate to let you know of the danger.
  • The Honda Lane Departure Warning should automatically be active in your vehicle. You don’t need to turn it on, but you can deactivate it if you choose.

Lane Departure Warning Options

Honda knows very well that no two drivers have the same set of needs and habits. They’ve made it easy to customize your Lane Departure Warning by selecting your preferred form of alert. Options include:

  • Seat and steering wheel vibration settings
  • Optional visual alert, in the form of a flashing lane marking symbol
  • Adjustable audible warning volume

Don’t forget: Your Honda Lane Departure Warning works hand-in-hand with your Road Departure Mitigation System™, which warns you if you’re in danger of leaving the road. Choosing to turn one or both systems off will not impact your other Honda Sensing® safety features.
