Changing Your Car Tires

So, how do you change a car tire? First, you’ll need to gather your supplies. Typically, to change a car tire, you’ll always need these tools:

  • A jack
  • Lug wrench
  • Spare or new tires
  • Your owner’s manual

Replacing a tire on any vehicle is a relatively easy process. However, following the steps exactly is imperative. Not doing so could damage your car, or worse, cause an injury! Also, it’s equally important to know when to call for help, especially if the location is dangerous, like the side of a busy highway. The steps to changing car tires are:

  • If you’re on the side of the road, move to safe place and turn on your hazards
  • Apply the parking brake and wheel wedges under the other tires
  • After removing the hubcap or wheel cover, loosen the lug nuts
  • Raise your car with the jack and remove the lug nuts
  • Remove the current tire and mount the new or spare tire
  • Tighten the lug nuts and lower your car back to the ground

Using a spare tire? Most spares should only be driven on for around 50 miles at maximum, and you should avoid driving at high speeds while you have a spare on your wheel! Stop into Honda of Escondido and get a new tire as soon as you can.

How Often to Change Car Tires

Knowing how often to change car tires comes down to only two things: how often you rotate the tires and how well your tires are made. If the tire pressure and tread are checked regularly, you should get the full mileage out of your tires. But, when the tread wear is significant and your depth is 2/32 of an inch or less, you need new tires. A good way to ensure the longevity of your tires is to schedule a tire rotation (or rotate your tires at home) whenever you get your oil changed. Looking for more ways to care for your tires?
