How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

First things first, there’s no harm in performing tire rotation more often than is necessary. However, you should see all of the benefits from tire rotation if you’re rotating at least once every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, or slightly more often with an AWD vehicle. Once you’ve learned how to rotate tires at home, you can ensure even wear for all of your tires–and maximize each tire’s lifespan. Along the way, you’ll improve performance and handling while minimizing unpleasant vehicle shake and pulling.

How to Do a Tire Rotation: Know Your Pattern

The best way to get your rotation pattern is to check your owner’s manual. However, if you don’t have it on hand, you can use the following guidelines:

  • Front-Wheel Drive: Swap the sides of your rear tires when you move them up to the front. Keep your front tires on the sides where they started.
  • Rear-Wheel Drive: Swap the sides of your front tires when you move them to the rear. Your rear tires can remain on their respective sides.
  • All-Wheel Drive: Rotate your tires in an X-shaped pattern. Both front and rear tires should change sides when you move them to the front or the back.

How to Do a Tire Rotation: Step-By-Step

In order to do a tire rotation at home, you’ll need a jack, a set of jack stands, and a trusty lug wrench. Then, take the following steps:

  1. Make sure you’re parked in a safe and level location.
  2. Activate your parking brake for safety.
  3. Use your lug wrench to loosen the nuts on all your wheels. Don’t remove them just yet.
  4. Lift up each corner of your vehicle using the jack, and place a jack stand beneath each jack point.
  5. Finally, finish removing the tires and move them to their new locations.
  6. If you’re prepared to do so, check the pressure of each tire and refill them.
  7. Mount each tire, and tighten the lug nuts as much as you can by hand.
  8. Lower the vehicle to the ground, and finish tightening the nuts.
  9. Instead of working clockwise or counterclockwise, work in a star pattern. This will help to ensure that each bolt fits snugly in its place.
